DFA Calls China’s Ban on Teodoro ‘Unfriendly’, Straining Philippines-China Relations

Manila: The Philippines, through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), has labeled Beijing's recent sanctions against Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and his family as an "unfriendly act" that complicates the bilateral relations between the two nations. This development marks another episode in the ongoing tension surrounding the West Philippine Sea.

According to Philippines News Agency, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Analyn Ratonel issued a statement on Thursday, emphasizing that while China has the sovereign prerogative to impose sanctions, the Philippines perceives these actions as detrimental to the efforts of building mutual trust and managing differences responsibly. Ratonel highlighted that such measures are not conducive to creating the conditions necessary for constructive engagement between the Philippines and China.

On Thursday, China announced a ban on Teodoro and his immediate family, preventing them from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. Additionally, Chinese organizations and individuals have been prohibited from conducting business with them. This move by China follows accusations from the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, claiming that Teodoro made irresponsible remarks undermining China's legitimate interests and damaging China-Philippines relations. However, the specific remarks prompting these sanctions were not detailed.

Teodoro has been known for his outspoken stance on asserting the Philippines' rights and interests over the West Philippine Sea, a contentious area between the two countries. This situation further escalates the diplomatic tensions, putting additional strain on the already complex relationship between the Philippines and China.
