Borongan: The Department of Education (DepEd) Eastern Samar Division and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Borongan have joined forces to enhance values formation among students in public schools throughout the province. This collaboration, known as Project SARIG, focuses on providing voluntary catechism sessions to bolster learners' spiritual and moral well-being.

According to Philippines News Agency, Project SARIG, which stands for Strengthening Maka-Diyos and Maka-Tao Core Values Through Voluntary Catechism Sessions for Holistic Learner Wellness, aims to complement the existing Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education curriculum. The initiative seeks to promote the spiritual, moral, emotional, and social wellness of learners by integrating voluntary catechism sessions into public schools.

A significant milestone in this initiative was the signing of a memorandum of agreement between DepEd Eastern Samar and the Diocese of Borongan on August 26, 2026. This agreement formalizes their partnership and commitment to implementing the project effectively across the region.

The DepEd announced on Tuesday that volunteer catechists would conduct these catechism sessions in coordination with school officials. The sessions are designed to reinforce core values and complement existing DepEd programs without interfering with the regular curriculum. The department emphasized that the project supports holistic learner development while respecting the integrity of the formal education system.

Both the DepEd and the Diocese of Borongan have pledged to sustain their collaboration, ensuring that values-driven education continues to flourish for learners throughout Eastern Samar.
