Manila: In recognition of Filipino architects’ contributions to the country, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has declared December as “Philippine Architecture Festival – National Architecture Month.” Under Proclamation 724, signed by Marcos on October 28 and made public on Saturday, the Board of Architecture under the Professional Regulation Commission has been tasked with leading the observance of this month-long celebration. The Board will coordinate with accredited architectural organizations to promote the discipline and recognize the significant contributions of Filipino architects.

According to Philippines News Agency, Proclamation 934, issued in 1971, initially declared the second week of December as “Architecture Week.” This was intended to highlight the invaluable contributions of architects toward planned urban growth, environmental planning, and overall social progress. However, President Marcos saw the need to amend Proclamation 934. By signing Proclamation 724, he extended the observance from
a week to a month-long festival. This change aims to provide a broader platform for promoting architecture and emphasizing its role in urban planning, sustainability, and social progress.

The proclamation acknowledges the Philippines’ rich architectural legacy and its vibrant contemporary designs. The country is recognized as a significant player in the global architectural arena, especially in preserving cultural heritage and advancing sustainable design practices. The government encourages all agencies, including government-owned or -controlled corporations and state universities and colleges, to participate in the month-long celebration.

In addition, all local government units, non-government organizations, professional associations, and the private sector are urged to join in the annual celebration. This collaborative effort aims to highlight the essential role of architecture in national development and foster a deeper appreciation for the craft and its practitioners.
