Davao city: The Davao City Water District (DCWD) reported that the city continues to benefit from a climate-resilient water service, with the available supply nearly double the current demand from its customers. DCWD spokesperson Jovana Cresta Duhaylungsod stated that the utility's production capacity is 728 million liters per day, while the current demand from existing customers stands at 376 million liters per day. "We have more than enough supply," she told the Philippine News Agency in an interview.
According to Philippines News Agency, data from the Community-Based Monitoring System shows that the city's population increased from 1,449,296 to 1,848,947 between 2020 and July 2024. Duhaylungsod addressed concerns about a potential shortage within five years due to population growth and economic development, clarifying that DCWD's supply remains sufficient to support the city for the foreseeable future.
She emphasized that DCWD is not complacent, highlighting ongoing efforts to develop additional sources and water infrastructures, including pipelines and storage facilities. Currently, 96 percent of DCWD's 270,000 service connections enjoy 24/7 water service with adequate pressure. The water utility has also minimized water losses to ensure more supply reaches customers.
Duhaylungsod added that DCWD continues to expand service connections across more areas, reinforcing its commitment to providing quality and affordable water to Dabawenyos. She noted that the abundance of available water supply, coupled with the integrity of infrastructure and proactive strategies, enables these efforts.
Under its 10-year plan, DCWD aims to develop more water sources and infrastructure, optimize operations, improve customer care, protect water sources, and maintain strong finances. "All these efforts are to sustain our current level of service, consistently provide a reliable and safe water supply 24/7, and expand coverage to more areas in Davao City," Duhaylungsod said.
