Davao City to Host Congress Addressing Child Labor

Davao city: The city government is set to host a congress on November 27-28 focused on children in street situations as part of its intensified campaign against child labor. Mark Timbang, the focal person for the City Social Welfare and Development Office, discussed the event’s objectives in an interview, emphasizing the need to strengthen child rights protection and amplify the voices of affected children.

According to Philippines News Agency, poverty is identified as the main driver of child labor, pushing children into unsafe and exploitative work conditions. Timbang highlighted that children under the age of 15 should not work, while those 15 and above may only do so under parental supervision, ensuring their education is not compromised. Currently, there are 87 registered street children in the city, although this number may fluctuate based on individual circumstances. The exact number of child laborers is still being finalized.

The upcoming congress will bring together 54 children for workshops with city officials and law enforcement agencies. The goal is to help these children recognize unsafe situations and learn to assert their rights. Timbang stressed the importance of fulfilling children’s rights, noting their potential to become future leaders.
