Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced on Monday that it has prepositioned around PHP1 billion in aid for farmers and fishers affected by Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) and Super Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong). In a phone interview, DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa detailed the allocation plan, emphasizing that at least PHP500 million is specifically reserved for those impacted by Uwan, which severely affected Central and Northern Luzon.
According to Philippines News Agency, the aid package encompasses essential farm inputs, including rice, corn, and high-value crop seedlings, along with animal feeds for livestock and poultry. Additionally, fingerlings are being provided to support affected fishers in restoring their livelihoods. Furthermore, a PHP25,000 loanable amount is available under the Survival and Recovery (SURE) Loan and indemnification programs. This loan is payable over three years at zero interest, providing financial relief to those in need.
De Mesa highlighted that the prepositioned amount does not include the indemnification fund for insured farmers through the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation. Meanwhile, the DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center continues to assess and validate reports of agricultural damage across the country, aiming to ensure that the aid reaches those most affected by the recent typhoons.
