DA Commends Suspension of DPWH Officials Over P94 Million Ghost FMR Projects

Manila:The Department of Agriculture (DA) has expressed approval of the Office of the Ombudsman's decision to suspend three officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for their alleged involvement in ghost farm-to-market (FMR) projects valued at over PHP94 million.

According to Philippines News agency, the suspension is a result of a complaint filed by the DA against the DPWH officials, who were allegedly involved in eight questionable FMR projects located in Davao Occidental. The preventive suspension is immediately enforceable and will last pending the proceedings' conclusion, for a period not exceeding six months.

DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. highlighted the importance of FMR projects for Filipino farmers and fishers, emphasizing their role in enhancing food security. He noted that better access to markets through these roads leads to higher incomes, reduced production costs, and contributes to stronger rural development.

The charges against the officials were filed by the DA on May 21 and pertain to allegations of graft, corrupt practices, malversation, and falsification of public documents. In one instance, a project was reported as fully completed even though it was still under construction, yet full payment had already been made. Another project reportedly lacked gravel pathways, indicating non-completion. Other implicated individuals could not be suspended as they are no longer in government service.
