DA Approves Export of 100,000 Metric Tons of Sugar to US to Stabilize Prices

Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) has confirmed the approval of exporting 100,000 metric tons (MT) of raw sugar to the United States under the US quota system. This strategic move aims to address the declining farmgate prices by managing the surplus in sugar inventories.

According to Philippine News Agency, DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. announced that the initiative is intended to absorb excess raw sugar and provide immediate relief to the sugar industry. The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) reported that as of December 21, 2025, the country's raw sugar production for the crop year 2025 to 2026 reached 474,170 MT.

SRA Administrator Luis Pablo Azcona emphasized the significance of the DA's decision in balancing supply and demand amidst increasing sugar production. He noted that since the new administration took office, raw sugar production has risen, allowing for the activation of US exports. This year marks the third consecutive year of increasing export volumes, growing from 33,000 tons to 66,000, and now reaching 100,000 tons.

Azcona highlighted that exporting such a volume is a governmental intervention to stabilize current farmgate prices. He stressed the importance of this step for farmers, arguing against inaction and pointing out the positive impact of sugar exports on farmers' incomes over the past two years.

The DA also committed to closely monitoring the importation of artificial sweeteners, which the SRA has identified as a factor impacting demand for locally-produced sugar. Secretary Tiu Laurel indicated that the DA might consider regulating the entry of artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes, given their potential effects on the demand for natural sugar.

Furthermore, the DA plans to collaborate with the Department of Health to assess the public health implications of artificial sweeteners, which are reported to be 200 times sweeter than regular sugar.
