Iloilo City: The local government is moving to standardize the qualifications of barangay health workers (BHWs) serving as Health Education and Promotion Officers (HEPOs) in Iloilo City, following a recommendation from the local health board.
According to Philippines News Agency, Councilor Alan Zaldivar, chair of the committee on health, sanitation, and hospital services at the Sangguniang Panlungsod (City Council), emphasized the importance of equipping BHWs with the necessary skills and knowledge. This initiative aligns with the guidelines set by Universal Health Care and aims to enhance the workers’ communication skills and understanding of their responsibilities.
Zaldivar sponsored the resolution that formally establishes the qualifications and criteria recommended by the health board. The council approved this resolution during its regular session on Wednesday. The criteria require HEPOs to be physically fit, knowledgeable in basic healthcare practices and interpersonal communication skills, and capable of assessing community health needs and addressing concerns. They must also be able to engage the community in efforts to improve public health.
The guidelines stipulate that HEPOs should be at least 18 years old and not older than 65. Zaldivar pointed out that the lack of training among BHWs has led to the underutilization of some health programs. By providing the necessary training, the local government aims to strengthen the capacity of BHWs to effectively promote public health initiatives.
Currently, barangay health workers receive an allowance of about PHP3,000.
