Quezon city: Far Eastern University (FEU) emerged victorious against De La Salle University with a score of 2-1 during the UAAP Season 88 women’s football tournament, held at the UP Diliman Football Field.
According to Philippines News Agency, the match saw Marienell Cristobal scoring twice for FEU, with goals in the 7th and 28th minutes. This victory not only secured FEU’s place in the finals with 21 points, but it also enhanced Ateneo de Manila University’s chances of a historic finals appearance. Ateneo currently holds 11 points, trailing behind La Salle, which has 12 points.
FEU coach Let Dimzon revealed the strategic motivation behind Cristobal’s performance, stating, “I told her that she needs to score today. That’s why when she scored, she went to me and we hugged because that was my challenge for her.”
La Salle’s attempt to level the match was thwarted by FEU’s strong defense. Maria Layacan’s shot in the 24th minute was blocked by goalkeeper Jessa Lehayan, who also denied Dani Tanjanco’s effort in the 69th minute. Jodie Banzon had a chance with a free kick in the 79th minute, but it missed the target.
In the closing moments, Stephanie Go±e managed to score for La Salle in the 90th minute, capitalizing on a rebound from Mikaela Villacin’s initial attempt. However, it was insufficient as FEU maintained their defensive stance until the end of the match. Dimzon noted, “The players have performed well in terms of defending and attacking, but in the last minutes, there were lapses. So I think the mental [awareness], we also need to improve.”
Looking ahead, FEU is set to play against Ateneo at 4:00 p.m., while La Salle will face the University of Santo Tomas at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
