Manila: The consultative council comprising representatives from the Department of Agriculture (DA), farmers, and other key stakeholders in the agricultural sector is set to become operational in January, as announced by DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. during an ambush interview on Thursday. This announcement was made at the annual membership meeting of the Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food, Inc. (PCAFI), where Tiu Laurel highlighted the council’s role in addressing urgent issues and concerns across the agricultural spectrum.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Tiu Laurel emphasized the need for the council to begin its monthly meetings by January 15. He stated, “Ang utos ko kahapon, dapat by Jan. 15, mag-start na ng mga meetings, monthly iyan,” signaling the importance of regular discussions to tackle challenges in agriculture. The primary function of the council will be to focus on major crops each month, facilitating in-depth discussions and decision-making.

The establishment o
f this council is anticipated to enhance policy reforms within the DA through more efficient decision-making processes and feedback collection. This initiative aims to modernize agriculture, boost local production, and ensure food accessibility for the country. Tiu Laurel noted, “The more we talk, the more ideas come out on how to make things better,” underscoring the value of consistent dialogue among stakeholders.

The council will be composed of 10 representatives from various sectors, including the DA, PCAFI, Federation of Free Farmers, processors, exporters, and farmers, creating a comprehensive platform for collaborative problem-solving and strategic planning.
