Manila: The combined death toll from twin typhoons Tino (international name Kalmaegi) and Uwan (Fung-wong) has now climbed to 297, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Monday. Of the total number, 269 were due to Tino with casualties reported across various regions including Cebu, Negros Occidental, and Agusan del Sur, among others.
According to Philippines News Agency, 113 persons remain missing due to Tino, with the highest numbers reported in Cebu and Negros Occidental. Additionally, 523 individuals have been injured, primarily in Cebu. In contrast, Uwan, which reached super typhoon strength, has resulted in 28 deaths, with Ifugao and Kalinga experiencing the most fatalities.
The report identifies 52 injuries attributed to Uwan across multiple regions, including Ifugao and Benguet. There are also two persons reported missing due to Uwan, one each in Kalinga and Mountain Province.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved the declaration of a state of national calamity on November 6. This declaration is aimed at expediting relief and recovery efforts, ensuring quicker access to calamity funds, and implementing price controls on essential goods.
The Office of Civil Defense has reported that approximately PHP838.5 million worth of assistance has been provided to those affected by the typhoons.
