CICC and Scam Watch Pilipinas Relaunch Campaign to Combat Love Scams

Taguig City: The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) and Scam Watch Pilipinas have relaunched an awareness campaign aimed at tackling the increasing threat of love scams. The initiative was announced during a press conference at the National Cybercrime Hub, emphasizing the urgency to address this issue as Valentine’s Day approaches.

According to Philippines News Agency, Scam Watch co-convenor Jocel De Guzman highlighted the dual impact of love scams, where victims not only suffer emotional distress but also financial loss. De Guzman explained that these scams often lead to other fraudulent activities, such as loan or investment scams.

The campaign revisits several common love scam tactics originally introduced by CICC and Scam Watch in their 2024 information drive, including the ‘Sad Boi, Sad Gurl,’ ‘Seducer,’ ‘Investor,’ ‘Servicemen,’ ‘Escort,’ ‘Predator,’ and ‘Slow Burn’ scams. These scams exploit the victim’s emotions to manipulate and deceive them.

De Guzman advised the public to remain vigilant, particularly by being wary of social media profiles with seemingly flawless photos or those lacking verification. He pointed out that scammers often avoid video calls, personal meetings, and may start requesting money, whether for personal use, investments, or loans.

CICC Executive Director Alexander Ramos urged the public to report any scam encounters through hotline 1326. The campaign is bolstered by support from several private partners, including Whoscall, Converge ICT, GoTyme, Maya, BPI, and Truth360.
