Cebu: The Cebu Provincial Police Office has launched a strategic aerial monitoring operation using drones to address severe traffic congestion caused by post-typhoon activities, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Thursday. Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the use of drone technology in Liloan, Cebu to improve mobility management and public safety operations in the aftermath of Typhoon Tino.
According to Philippines News Agency, Nartatez stated that the initiative reflects the PNP’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in crisis situations, aligning with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to enhance the use of modern technology in disaster response. The drone-assisted surveillance provides real-time road assessments, allowing authorities to quickly adjust traffic plans, clear obstructions, and facilitate the passage of emergency vehicles and relief convoys.
‘Aerial monitoring has been of great help in the rapid assessment of the road situation. Through drone operations, our commanders on the ground can see real-time traffic flow and immediately adjust road management plans. This allows us to prioritize the movement of rescue teams, medical assistance, and relief convoys,’ Nartatez said.
He added that the integration of drone surveillance is part of the PNP’s ongoing modernization program in disaster response. ‘Our countrymen will not only see the presence of the police on the ground but also smart monitoring using technology. It helps us act faster, safer, and more efficiently in critical situations like this,’ he said.
Nartatez also directed all regional and provincial police offices in affected areas to intensify visibility patrols in evacuation centers and heavily hit communities, ensuring peace and order while relief and rehabilitation efforts continue.
