CAGAYAN DE ORO: More than 75,000 kilograms of waste were collected in Cagayan de Oro following this year’s New Year celebrations, marking a notable decrease in the volume of waste compared to previous years. This effective waste management was attributed to proactive measures implemented by local authorities and waste management firms.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jermie Danuco, operations manager of Tencil, a third-party waste collection firm, stated in a radio interview that the collected waste originated from five public markets in the city. Danuco emphasized that the reduction in waste volume was a result of deploying collection trucks as early as December 24, 2024, which efficiently managed the waste from public markets before the New Year festivities.

The city government has contracted Tencil to oversee waste collection and disposal. In addition to Tencil’s efforts, the City Economic Enterprises Department and the City Engineering Office have been actively working to maintain clean streets throughout Cagayan de Oro.

Armen Cuenca, chief of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office, highlighted the need to limit the number of vendors operating on sidewalks to further reduce waste accumulation during future holiday seasons. He noted that vendors were previously reminded about the importance of waste segregation and preparation for collection. Despite these efforts, some vendors did not adhere to the guidelines, indicating room for improvement in waste management compliance.
