Caraga: The Department of Health in Caraga (DOH-13) reported on Monday the first firecracker-related injury in the region since the start of the Yuletide season.
According to Philippines News Agency, the victim is a 9-year-old boy from Surigao City in Surigao del Norte province who sustained an injury to his right eye. The report indicated that the injury was caused by a firecracker labeled 'boga' on Sunday afternoon. The DOH-13 confirmed that the victim was immediately brought to a medical facility for treatment and is now in stable condition.
The 'boga,' or "PVC cannon," is a modern version of the bamboo cannon traditionally used during celebrations like New Year's Eve. It produces loud sounds using denatured alcohol as fuel and has been banned nationwide since 2006. The agency has highlighted the dangers associated with such pyrotechnics, noting that they can cause serious injuries, including burns, cuts, eye damage, and finger loss. Prompt medical attention is crucial to prevent complications, infections, and save lives.
Following the incident, DOH-13 has reminded Caraga residents to safeguard their families and communities from the perils of firecrackers. The agency urged residents to welcome 2026 with a focus on joy, laughter, health, and togetherness, steering clear of the hazards posed by firecrackers.
