CALABARZON: The Police Regional Office (PRO) 4-A has successfully confiscated over 43,000 illegal firecrackers, amounting to more than PHP2 million, during a crackdown spanning from December 18, 2024, to January 1, 2025. The operation is part of a broader initiative to enforce firecracker regulations, which has led to a notable decrease in firecracker-related injuries in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, the PRO 4-A Director, Brig. Gen. Paul Kenneth Lucas, reported that the strict enforcement measures have contributed to a significant reduction in injuries, with cases dropping to 160 during the period from December 1, 2024, to January 1, 2025. This marks a substantial decrease from the 271 cases recorded in the same timeframe the previous year. Despite the successes in reducing injuries, nine cases of illegal firearm discharges were recorded during the holiday season.

Individuals involved in these firearm-related incidents now face charges under Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act. Furthermore, administrative cases are being prepared against law enforcement or military personnel implicated in these offenses.

Brig. Gen. Lucas attributed the positive outcomes to heightened vigilance, effective public information campaigns, and the rigorous enforcement of firecracker regulations. He expressed gratitude to both the personnel involved and the public for their cooperation in achieving these results. Moving forward, authorities remain focused on maintaining public safety through ongoing enforcement efforts and community collaboration.
