Central luzon: Police Regional Office (PRO) 3 (Central Luzon) chief, Brig. Gen. Jess B. Mendez, has directed all police personnel across the region to strengthen the safekeeping and security of their issued firearms following recent firearm-related incidents involving students. In a statement on Wednesday, Mendez emphasized that every police officer bears the responsibility of ensuring that government-issued firearms are properly secured, safely stored, and kept beyond the reach of unauthorized individuals at all times.
According to Philippines News Agency, the directive aims to reinforce accountability among police personnel and prevent incidents arising from the improper handling or storage of firearms. "Recent incidents serve as a reminder that every firearm entrusted to a police officer carries a serious responsibility. I have directed all PRO-3 personnel to strictly comply with existing policies on the custody, handling, and safekeeping of issued firearms," Mendez said.
He also instructed commanders to intensify supervision and ensure strict compliance with firearm accountability measures within their offices, police stations, and operational units. Mendez noted that discipline and accountability should extend beyond police operations and be reflected in the proper care and security of government-issued equipment.
"The badge we wear comes with a duty to lead by example. By exercising responsible firearm ownership and strict accountability, we can help prevent avoidable incidents and reinforce the public's trust and confidence in the police service," he added. Mendez said the directive aligns with the Philippine National Police's Focused Agenda, which promotes professionalism, discipline, and accountability among police personnel while ensuring effective public service.
