Borongan: The city government of Borongan in Eastern Samar conducted a dry run and initial distribution of fuel subsidy coupons on Wednesday, marking the introduction of its new fuel assistance program aimed at supporting registered tricycle drivers, operators, and pump boat operators.
According to Philippines News Agency, Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda spearheaded the rollout, which is part of a local ordinance designed to aid transport sector workers grappling with rising fuel prices. The program is expected to benefit over 900 members of the local transport sector. "The program is designed to provide direct relief to transport workers and their families amid the continuing increase in fuel costs driven by international developments," Agda stated.
The initiative is formalized through the Integrated Community Gasoline Fuel Assistance ordinance, authored by Councilor Ian Galo. It is available to qualified beneficiaries who meet certain requirements. These beneficiaries will receive a daily fuel subsidy of PHP100 from Monday to Saturday for 13 weeks, facilitated through a coupon-based system. The city government has earmarked PHP10 million for the program, which will persist as long as funding permits.
Six fuel stations within the city have partnered with the local government to accept the fuel coupons. Claims for fuel will be processed until 4 p.m. daily, allowing participating stations time to handle reimbursement claims. Registration is still open for qualified tricycle drivers and pump boat operators who have not yet applied. Applicants must provide supporting documents, including proof of registration, identification cards, and evidence of active operation and residency.
The city government emphasized that the program is intended to safeguard livelihoods, maintain mobility, and bolster the local economy in the face of ongoing fuel price fluctuations.
