Manila: The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) seized a record-breaking PHP85.167 billion worth of smuggled goods in 2024, Bureau of Customs (BOC) Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio reported Wednesday. Rubio stated that this is an unprecedented anti-smuggling accomplishment in the bureau’s history.

According to Philippines News Agency, Rubio emphasized the need for continued vigilance in light of the emerging practices utilized by criminal organizations. “Recognizing that the challenges we face are evolving, we must reinforce our anti-smuggling drive, bearing in mind that safeguarding our society is paramount,” he said in a statement.

During the 38th founding anniversary celebration of the CIIS on Monday, the BOC hailed the CIIS-Manila International Container Port as the Overall Best Field Station Office. This recognition followed the seizure of PHP60.5 billion worth of contraband, including illegal drugs valued at PHP876 million, last year.

Rubio, along with Intelligence Group Deputy Commissioner Juvymax Uy and CIIS Director Verne Enciso, also led the turnover of PHP500,000 cash donation to the GMA Kapuso Foundation during the celebration. Rubio mentioned that the donation would be utilized to build schools and bridges in calamity-stricken areas, especially in Camarines Sur.

“This generous contribution was made even more meaningful by the selfless gesture of IG personnel, who voluntarily pooled a portion of their Christmas bonuses to support the cause,” Rubio added.
