New Clark City: Rian Marco Tirol of Ateneo de Manila University clocked 29.12 seconds to rule the 50-meter breaststroke Monday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 87 swimming tournament at New Clark City Aquatics Center in Capas, Tarlac.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tirol’s teammate Rafael Isip secured the silver medal with a time of 29.41s, while University of the Philippines’ Jalil Taguinod grabbed the bronze in 29.53s. This victory marked Tirol’s second gold medal at the tournament, having previously won the 4x50m medley relay alongside Ivo Nikolai Enot, Victoriano Tirol IV, and Nathan Sason on Sunday. Their combined time of 1:45.31 set a new record, breaking the previous eight-year record of 1:46.91.
Rookie Miguel Barreto further boosted the Blue Eagles’ medal tally by clinching the gold in the men’s 800m freestyle with a time of 8:33.28. La Salle’s Alexander Chu followed with a silver medal finish at 8:38.94, while Ateneo’s Juan Marco Daos took bronze with a
time of 8:45.39.
Miguel’s elder brother, Rafael Barreto, added to Ateneo’s success by winning the men’s 100m freestyle in 52.84s. Not to be outdone, Mishka Sy captured the gold in the women’s 200m Individual Medley with a time of 2:25.74.
Ateneo also triumphed in the women’s 4x50m medley relay, with Samantha Coronel, Sofia Isip, Maiki Gonzaga, and Kirsten Manuel clocking in at 2:01.83. Meanwhile, De La Salle University showcased their strength in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay, women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, and the women’s 800m freestyle events. The La Salle men’s team comprised Alexander Chu, Josemaria Roldan, Bryce Barraza, and Reiniel Lagman, while the women’s team included Hannah Sanchez, Samantha Banas, Dianna Cruz, and Raven Alcoseba. In the individual events, Mikaela Talosig emerged victorious in the women’s 800m freestyle.
In another highlight, UP team captain Camille Buico successfully defended her title in the women’s 100m freestyle, finishing with a time of 59.84s.
