Brooke’s point: The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Brooke’s Point District Jail participated in a significant mangrove reforestation activity, planting approximately 6,000 mangrove propagules along the coastline of Barangay Barong-Barong on Tuesday. This initiative is part of the local government’s continuing efforts toward environmental protection and enhancing climate resilience.
According to Philippines News Agency, the activity was led by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) of Brooke’s Point. The mangrove planting is aimed at protecting coastal communities from erosion and storm surges while creating natural habitats for fish and other marine life.
Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo, BJMP Mimaropa spokesperson, highlighted that this activity is part of the Bureau’s ongoing environmental protection and rehabilitation program, which includes regular tree and mangrove planting initiatives across its 19 jail facilities. Anglo emphasized the importance of such activities, stating that caring for the environment is synonymous with caring for communities, and these programs offer a chance to plant hope and contribute to both environmental and community healing.
MDRRMO chief Mohd Raiyan Miranda noted that the mangrove planting is a key component of the agency’s Disaster Risk Reduction-Climate Change Adaptation initiatives, particularly in coastal areas with limited vegetation. The MDRRMO and MENRO are committed to conducting monthly monitoring to ensure the mangroves’ growth and survival, thereby strengthening ongoing environmental programs within the municipality.
