Benguet: The Benguet State University (BSU) plans to establish approximately 100 hectares of bamboo forest to aid reforestation efforts, support a bamboo textile project, and promote engineered bamboo production. Dr. Roscinto Ian Lumbres, BSU vice president for research and extension, discussed the initiative, which began in 2024 with the production of propagules planted this year.

According to Philippines News Agency, the project utilizes a PHP5 million bamboo development fund from Senator Loren Legarda to propagate planting materials in San Pascual, Tuba, Benguet. Initial reforestation sites include a two-hectare area at the Benguet Corp. in Itogon and the BSU compound in Mankayan. The goal is to plant ‘bayog’ and ‘giant’ bamboo species in at least 20 hectares this year.

Lumbres explained that ‘bayog’ and ‘giant’ bamboo, indigenous to the region, are being produced with the help of cooperatives. A memorandum of agreement with an engineered bamboo manufacturer supports the wood industry, and the project is part of the regional bamboo initiative aimed at enhancing the Cordillera’s bamboo production.

The initiative also involves developing bamboo-based products, such as soap, and collaborating with the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) and Department of Science and Technology (DOST). These organizations established the Bamboo Textile Fiber Innovation Hub at Abra State University in Lagangilang to boost bamboo fiber production.

Lumbres noted the Japanese government’s interest in BSU’s bamboo project, following a visit last December. Their return visit next week aims to finalize a partnership concerning the bamboo area project.

Dr. Kenneth Laruan, BSU president, highlighted the project’s relevance as the university marks its 39th charter anniversary. He emphasized the importance of ecological initiatives, noting that changes in the Cordillera ecosystem could impact other regions, necessitating environmental programs.
