Basilan Governor Praises Comelec for Addressing Maluso Election Anomaly

Basilan: Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman commended the Commission on Elections (Comelec), election observers, and the security sector for detecting and acting on reported pre-shading of ballots in Maluso town. He noted their vigilance as crucial to maintaining the integrity of the first Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Comelec earlier revealed that election materials in Maluso town had been compromised after poll officials discovered pre-shaded ballots in 36 of the 69 voting precincts. Consequently, the town was placed under the poll body's control following the discovery. Governor Hataman emphasized the importance of strict monitoring of every ballot and precinct, highlighting that the issue was observed, documented, and addressed legally.

Governor Hataman urged Comelec to conduct a thorough investigation to identify those responsible and ensure similar attempts are prevented in the future. He also called on poll watchers, election observers, civil society organizations, and voters across the Bangsamoro region to remain vigilant throughout the voting, counting, and canvassing processes. He stressed that every vote is sacred and belongs to the voter, urging respect and protection of the true decision of the Bangsamoro people.

Hataman emphasized that monitoring should continue until the last ballot is counted, ensuring the true voice of Bangsamoro is heard. Basilan has 284,244 registered voters.

Meanwhile, the Comelec extended voting time in Al-Barka town until 9 p.m. after voting was delayed until noon. Brig. Gen. Frederick Sales, commander of the Army's 1101st Infantry Brigade, reported that teachers were prevented from bringing election paraphernalia and opening polling precincts as scheduled. Although Sales did not disclose the identities of the armed men who blocked the teachers, he mentioned having conferred with the leaders of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.
