Baguio: The city government has ramped up health and safety measures a month ahead of the Holy Week observance and the expected influx of summer vacation travelers. Mayor Benjamin Magalong, in a media interview on the sidelines of Monday's flag raising rites, said he has directed the partial activation of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and the Barangay DRRMC.
According to Philippines News Agency, Magalong emphasized the importance of preparedness due to the anticipated increase in tourist arrivals during the summer vacation and Holy Week. He stated that while tourist arrivals are consistent, especially during weekends and long weekends, the city experiences a significant rise in visitors during these seasons, necessitating thorough preparations.
As chair of the CDRRRMC, Magalong earlier issued CDRRMC Memorandum 02-2026, alerting key departments and offices of the city government for possible mobilization. The memorandum specified that the Smart City Command Center (SC3), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs), and the Public Information Office will be on Blue Alert from February 21, 2026, to April 30, 2026, to ensure effective coordination with all warning and frontline agencies.
The memorandum outlined the specific roles of the City Engineering Office, Transportation and Traffic Management Division (CEO-TTMD), Public Order and Safety Division (POSD), and General Services Office. It also directed the City Health Services Office to activate all Health Emergency Response Teams to prevent overlapping and duplication of functions.
Additionally, the city will continue anti-road obstruction operations to ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians. Health and medical aid stations will be established in areas of convergence, and health centers will be equipped with necessary services and supplies. Regular garbage collection will also be implemented to prevent the spread of diseases.
