Quezon city: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) assured its commitment to advancing women's rights and welfare in observance of National Women's Month 2026 (NWM). DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian conveyed the department's support for women empowerment during the kick-off program for the NWM at the central office in Quezon City on Monday. This year's theme is 'WE (women and everyone) for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society.'
According to Philippines News Agency, Gatchalian stated that the DSWD aims to strengthen women's capacities through various programs and services, expand access to protection and support services, and promote safe spaces that uphold dignity and inclusion. He acknowledged the crucial role of Filipino women as equal partners in nation-building and emphasized their importance as pillars of the home, community, and nation, contributing to a more inclusive future.
Gatchalian highlighted that the celebration serves as a reminder that gender equality is a collective responsibility, calling on women, men, youth, elders, families, and communities to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and ensure fair opportunities for women and young girls. The sub-theme, 'Lead the Babaylans, Filipinas!' underscores women's leadership as an integral part of Filipino identity, inspired by the historical influence of the Babaylans.
In support of the administration's call to honor women and promote gender equality, the DSWD has organized numerous activities for the NWM celebration. Officials and employees wore shades of purple during the first flag-raising ceremony in March, a practice to be continued every Wednesday and on designated special days. Purple, as noted by the Philippine Commission on Women, symbolizes justice and dignity.
The DSWD also planned contests to encourage employee participation, such as spoken poetry, mobile photography, Best Purple Outfit, and Best TikTok Video contests. Additional activities include a livelihood bazaar showcasing products from the Sustainable Livelihood Program, 'Musika ng Kababaihan' musical events on Fridays, and brown bag sessions focusing on women-related topics.
To honor Women with Disability Day on March 30, the DSWD will recognize women officials, employees, and other workers with disabilities, acknowledging their contributions to the department.
