NPA rebel killed, another wounded in Butuan skirmish

BUTUAN CITY: A New People’s Army (NPA) fighter was killed while another was wounded in an armed encounter with troopers of the 65th Infantry Battalion (65IB) at the boundary of barangays Taligaman and Bugsukan here on Friday afternoon.   In a statement on Saturday, the 65IB said they dispatched a team after residents alerted them to the presence of an undetermined number of armed men.   A 20-minute gunfight occurred and the rebels immediately fled, leaving behind a dead fighter and another wounded, who was provided with first aid and later taken to a medical facility in Butuan City.

FDA approves new Alzheimer’s drug that appears to slow illness

HOUSTON, United States: The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday approved a new drug that appears to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.   The FDA said Leqembi — known chemically as lecanemab — will be prescribed to patients with mild or early stages of the brain-deteriorating disease.   The drug is the first of its kind to convincingly show researchers that it can slow the decline in memory and thinking.   However, experts said the delay in cognitive deterioration caused by the drug will likely amount to just several months, which in some cases is a very

NEW YORK: One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea in Hawaii, has erupted again, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).   The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, or HVO, detected a glow in Kilauea’s summit at about 4:34 p.m. local time on Thursday.   “Kīlauea’s summit eruption continues and is confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park,” the HVO said in a release on Friday.   “HVO is lowering Kīlauea’s volcano alert level from WARNING to WATCH because the initial high effusion rates are declining, and no infrastructure is threatened,” it added.   In late September, the

World food prices up 14.3% in 2022

ANKARA: Global food prices increased 14.3 percent year on year in 2022, the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said Friday.   The FAO food price index rose 18 points from the previous year to 143.7 points in 2022.   The index measures monthly changes in international prices of five major food commodity groups – cereal, meat, dairy products, vegetable oils, and sugar.   The dairy price index, according to FAO, jumped 19.6 percent, registering the highest annual average on record since 1990 with 142.5 points.   The cereal price index rose 17.9 percent, from 2021 to a
