Australia and Philippines Strengthen Aviation Security Collaboration

Manila: The Australian government continues to assist the Philippines in enhancing its aviation security, with a focus on capacity building, an official from the Office for Transportation Security (OTS) announced on Monday. “Since there are direct flights between the Philippines and Australia, there is a need for stronger cooperation and collaboration, sharing of information and best practices to prevent any acts of unlawful interference or terrorism,” OTS spokesperson Kim Marquez explained to the Philippine News Agency during an interview.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has been actively involved in providing training and workshops to Philippine airport authorities. These initiatives aim to improve the knowledge and skills of aviation security personnel, ensuring they are well-prepared to tackle potential threats. Marquez emphasized that this capacity-building effort is an ongoing process, reflecting the commitment to maintaining high security standards.

In addition to training, Australian authorities participate in security assessments of various airports alongside the OTS, allowing for a valuable exchange of best practices. Marquez also highlighted the contribution of equipment, noting that the Australian government has supplied the OTS with five laptops equipped with X-ray tutor software, enhancing the ability to detect prohibited items. Recently, an additional 10 laptops were provided, further supporting these efforts.

A Facebook post from the OTS praised the collaboration on aviation security, noting its significant role in developing and enforcing measures to safeguard air travel. OTS administrator Arthur Bisnar remarked on the longstanding support from Australia, stating that it has enabled Philippine airport authorities to stay ahead of potential threats.
