Manila: Ateneo de Manila University announced the passing of two of its men's basketball players, Rene Clert Baterbonia and Divine Adili, who drowned during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon, leaving the university community in mourning.
According to Philippines News Agency, Baterbonia, aged 19, and Adili, aged 21, were participating in a Blue Eagles' team-building event when the tragic accident took place. Ateneo has expressed its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased players and has requested the community to keep them in their thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.
Baterbonia, a celebrated athlete from Ateneo de Davao, had led his region to victory in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa and was recognized as the Most Valuable Player. His recent move to the Ateneo campus in Quezon City was intended to mark the beginning of his stint with the Blue Eagles in the upcoming UAAP Season 89. Adili, originally from Nigeria, had already represented Ateneo in Season 88.
Ateneo is providing support to the bereaved families and those affected by the tragedy within the university community. The institution has also requested privacy for the grieving individuals as they navigate this profound loss.
Talacogon National High School in Agusan del Sur, Baterbonia's former school, expressed its sorrow and shock over his sudden passing, highlighting his journey from a dedicated student and athlete to a national sports figure. The school honored his humility, passion, and the pride he brought to his hometown.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has also extended its condolences and is in communication with Ateneo's basketball officials to offer assistance to those impacted by the incident. The SBP expressed solidarity with the grieving families and the Ateneo community, offering prayers for comfort and healing during this difficult period.
