Army Working 24-7 to Clear Typhoon-Hit Roads

Manila: Philippine Army (PA) units are working nonstop to restore access to isolated communities in typhoon-hit areas in Aurora and Cebu provinces.

According to Philippines News Agency, in a statement on Wednesday, PA spokesperson Col. Louie Dema-ala said these units are working “around the clock” to clear roads of debris left by recent powerful cyclones Tino and Uwan. In Aurora, where Super Typhoon Uwan made landfall on Sunday, combat engineer regiment (CER) teams conducted rescue and clearing operations in Barangay Bacong in San Luis town, Dema-ala stated.

“CER teams also cleared roads and helped repair washed-out thoroughfares in Barangay Amper, Dipaculao, Aurora,” he added. Meanwhile, the 53rd Engineer Brigade deployed teams to assist in the clearing and rehabilitation efforts in Liloan, one of the towns heavily damaged by floods during the height of Typhoon Tino’s onslaught in Cebu last week.

The death toll from Super Typhoon Uwan had increased to 27, based on the latest Office of Civil Defense report released on Wednesday. On the other hand, the death toll from Typhoon Tino is at 232, according to the latest tally from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

“The PA assures the affected communities and families that they can count on the strong, dependable, and committed soldiers in the subsequent post-typhoon relief and recovery efforts,” Dema-ala said.
