Manila: The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has praised Angkas CEO George Royeca for taking responsibility and cooperating with its investigation into a road-blocking incident involving the ride-hailing firm’s riders in Cainta, Rizal. The incident, which involved a motorcade blocking an intersection against a red light, was caught on a viral dashcam video.

According to Philippines News Agency, LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II stated that a show cause order was issued to Royeca, who took full accountability for the incident. During the first hearing held at the LTO Central Office, Royeca was asked to submit relevant documents and provide an explanation.

Mendoza highlighted the significance of Royeca’s actions, stating, “This is the first of its kind, it’s a good example for everybody. He has to take the lead and show us an example to follow especially since he has so many followers on social media.” Mendoza expressed hope that other leaders would emulate this responsible approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of road safety.

At the hearing, Royeca apologized and committed to preventing similar incidents in the future. He reiterated Angkas’s focus on safety and compliance with road regulations, stating, “We have always been focused on advocating safety and of course our entire platform advocacy of really espousing following road rules. And no one is above the law including myself.”

The individuals involved in the incident are under investigation for “Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle” as per Section 27 of Republic Act 4136. Mendoza assured that the case would be resolved promptly, thanks to Royeca’s cooperation.

The motorcade, which was part of a “Unity Ride” aimed at promoting road safety on the Marilaque Highway, has drawn attention to the importance of adherence to traffic rules.
