Manila: The provincial government of Albay, through the Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), has issued a preparedness advisory following reports from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) about changes in Mayon Volcano indicating the presence of new and shallow magma.
According to Philippines News Agency, Albay Governor and PDRRMC chair Noel Rosal announced advisory No. 2025-48, which prohibits all human activities within the six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone around Mayon Volcano. This includes activities such as mountain climbing, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) riding, orchid picking, and vegetable harvesting, among others, as part of disaster avoidance and public safety measures.
Rosal has directed all cities, municipalities, and barangay disaster risk reduction and management councils in the vicinity of the volcano to ensure preparedness and maintain continuous monitoring of activities in their areas. The advisory emphasizes the need for heightened alertness, coordination, and resource mobilization as necessary.
The public has been advised to remain vigilant and await official updates and further advisories from Phivolcs and local authorities. As per the Phivolcs advisory, the recent changes in Mt. Mayon’s activities could lead to an increase in rockfall incidents, potentially rising from a daily average of three to 16.
