Alas Pilipinas’ Title Bid Ends in AVC U16 Championship Loss to Chinese Taipei

Amman: The Philippines concluded its title bid in the 2nd Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s U16 Championship after a defeat against Chinese Taipei, with scores of 14-25, 21-25, 15-25, in the Final 8 round at the Prince Hamzah Sports Hall in Amman, Jordan.

According to Philippines News Agency, team captain Xyz Rayco led a second-set rally that gave the Philippines a promising 17-12 lead. However, Chinese Taipei countered with strong performances from Chan Tzu-Yun and Chang Yun-Chen, securing victory in both the second and third sets. Chan delivered 18 points, while Chang contributed 17 points, elevating Chinese Taipei to 2-0 in Pool F. With this win, they joined Japan, who defeated Thailand earlier, as the two semifinalists. Additionally, Chen Ting-Yi added 12 points, including eight in the decisive third set.

Chinese Taipei and Japan’s victories also qualified them for next year’s FIVB Volleyball Girls’ U17 World Championship in Chile. Rayco, who scored 12 points, expressed mixed emotions after the match, acknowledging the team’s preparation and effort despite the disappointing outcome.

Nadeth Herbon added 11 points for the Philippines, while setter Resty Jane Olaguir contributed four. Libero Frances Ramos anchored the defense with 15 digs. Alas coach Edwin Leyva highlighted the importance of maintaining energy and communication during matches, noting that the team’s momentum faltered at crucial points. He also mentioned that some younger players faced minor aches but performed commendably overall.

Alas Pilipinas, consisting mainly of players from various provinces, had secured their spot in the Final 8 after sweeping Iran, despite carrying over a loss from a previous match against defending champions Japan. The Philippines is set to face Thailand on Thursday at 4 p.m. (Philippine time) before advancing to the classification round for 5th to 8th places.
