Manila: The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced minimal damage to airports in areas impacted by Typhoon Tino. The authority confirmed that while several airports experienced minor structural impacts, no significant infrastructure damage or aviation-related incidents were reported.
According to Philippines News Agency, CAAP Director General, retired Lt. Gen. Raul Del Rosario, stated that initial situation reports revealed minor structural impacts. However, major infrastructure damage was not observed. Del Rosario emphasized that personnel have been deployed to assess any damage and ensure immediate repairs. He also mentioned that CAAP is coordinating with area managers for timely updates and swift responses.
Specifically, San Vicente Airport in Palawan experienced flooding at its Aircraft and Rescue and Firefighting station. Meanwhile, Borongan Airport in Eastern Samar reported minor roof damage to its terminal building. Hilongos Airport in Leyte faced a broken glass door and ceiling damage at its pre-departure area entrances. Guiuan Airport in Eastern Samar noted minor gutter and roof damage.
As of now, none of the 10 international airports regulated by CAAP, including the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and others, have reported any damage. Typhoon Tino has intensified slightly and is moving away from northern Palawan over the West Philippine Sea after its seventh landfall. Its first landfall was recorded in Silago, Southern Leyte.
The typhoon caused massive flooding and left significant destruction along its path, particularly in Cebu, resulting in 66 fatalities according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council’s report.
