Davao: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 11 (Davao Region) is introducing farmers to smart technologies that use data, automation, and artificial intelligence for more sustainable agriculture.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOST-11, through the Southern Mindanao Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research and Development Consortium, showcased innovations, including Zappify, an IoT-based pest control device. DOST-11 Director Anthony Sales highlighted that these technologies serve as practical tools to transform farming practices.
Sales explained that Zappify utilizes sensors to detect pests and activate control mechanisms only when necessary, which aims to reduce pesticide usage and costs. In addition to Zappify, another innovation employs multispectral imaging to provide detailed data on plant health and soil conditions, aiding farmers in making informed decisions regarding irrigation, fertilization, and harvesting.
Furthermore, the INDAI system uses AI and non-invasive imaging to assess durian quality without cutting the fruit open, assisting growers in meeting market standards and minimizing waste. Sales emphasized that by equipping the agriculture sector with smart technologies, the region is securing improved harvests and fostering a more sustainable and competitive future for Mindanao.
