Cebu: Mayors of the 49 localities in Cebu signed on Thursday a manifesto expressing their support for the provincial government’s initiative to promote history and culture.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, organized by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, has showcased the historical and cultural uniqueness of the various towns, which translated into tourism-related opportunities that benefitted the townsfolk.

‘This grandest celebration of the year is an event that showcases the pride of Cebu where all the municipalities come together in unity and solidarity, avowing each other’s commitment to solidify efforts for the benefit of everyone, respect for its diversity, and proclaiming its identity through its individual municipal festival,’ the manifesto read.

The manifesto came after a social media post called on the provincial government to stop holding the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo, saying that the PHP200 million allocated for this year’s event was a waste of government resources. The mayors ob
jected to the insinuation of irregular spending of the funds, noting that the amount was distributed as a form of subsidy for the local government units’ (LGU) logistical needs in showcasing cultural heritage through dance festivals.

‘Moreover, the conduct of this grandest event paved the way to economic opportunities, not only for our talents, costume designers, artists, performers, and choreographers but also to our displaced and informal workers of each LGU during practice, as well,’ the manifesto added. The Pasigarbo sa Sugbo is held every Aug. 6, a special non-working public holiday in Cebu province as set forth in Republic Act 7698, signed on April 29, 1994.
