4 Million Trees Planted Across Philippines on Arbor Day: DENR

Manila: More than 4 million trees were planted nationwide on Thursday as the country celebrated the Philippine Arbor Day, surpassing the initial target by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of 3 million trees. At the tree planting event in Manila, Environment Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna highlighted the participation of over 1,600 local government units (LGUs), emphasizing the growing support for environmental protection and climate action.

According to Philippines News Agency, the annual observance, mandated under Republic Act No. 10176, or the Philippine Arbor Day Act of 2012, promotes tree-planting and tree-growing activities across the nation. DENR Assistant Secretary Norlito Eneran explained that the law encourages LGUs to conduct tree-planting activities and engage citizens in environmental conservation. Eneran pointed out the critical role of trees in helping communities adapt to climate change, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

Meanwhile, Mayor Francisco 'Isko Moreno' Domagoso discussed Manila's ongoing efforts to expand green spaces as part of its environmental program. Domagoso stated that the city is committed to creating open green spaces to align with national environmental goals. He highlighted the conversion of vacant and underutilized spaces into green areas and community gardens as part of the city's initiatives.

An ongoing project in Manila aims to plant 100,000 bamboo trees as a strategy to improve air quality and mitigate flooding. Domagoso emphasized this approach as a means to combat pollution and enhance air quality in the highly urbanized city, demonstrating Manila's dedication to urban greening efforts.
