270,000 Families Evacuated as Super Typhoon Uwan Approaches

Manila: Over 270,000 families have been evacuated as a precautionary measure amid the possible devastation caused by Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong), the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Sunday. In an online briefing, OCD deputy administrator for administration Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV reported that as of 11 a.m., an estimated 270,682 families or 916,863 individuals had been preemptively evacuated across 11 regions.

According to Philippines News Agency, the preemptive evacuations were conducted in the National Capital Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Region 1 (Ilocos Region), Region 2 (Cagayan Valley), Region 3 (Central Luzon), Region 4A (Calabarzon), Region 4B (Mimaropa), Region 5 (Bicol), Region 6 (Western Visayas), Region 7 (Central Visayas), and Region 8 (Eastern Visayas). Alejandro highlighted that more than half of the evacuees, or 192,765 families, were from Bicol, followed by Eastern Visayas with 32,020 families, and Calabarzon with 24,209 families.

As of Sunday noon, Alejandro noted that strong winds and moderate to heavy rains were being experienced in Bicol, particularly in Catanduanes where several areas were facing weak telecommunication signals. All provinces in Bicol, except Sorsogon, reported power outages as of 9 a.m.
