25 Dead as Bus Carrying Mourners Overturns in Kenya

Kisumu: At least 25 people were killed when a 51-seater bus transporting mourners overturned in western Kenya, police reported. Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina stated that the victims were returning from a funeral when the bus lost control and overturned at a known blackspot, marking one of the region’s deadliest accidents in 2025.

According to Philippines News Agency, the site of the accident, known as the Coptic Roundabout, is located in Kisumu County, approximately 350 kilometers (217 miles) northwest of Nairobi. This location has been notorious for accidents, adding to the growing concern over road safety in the area.

Kenya has experienced an increase in fatal road accidents this year, with police attributing many of these tragedies to speeding, reckless driving, and poorly maintained vehicles. These factors continue to pose significant risks to commuters and passengers across the nation.

The bus accident occurred just one day after a twin tragedy struck Kenya’s transport sector. A light aircraft crashed into residential buildings in central Kenya, resulting in six fatalities. Additionally, a train in Naivasha collided with a staff bus belonging to the Kenya Pipeline Company, killing eight workers. The series of incidents underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures in Kenya’s transportation systems.
