Creation of Migrant Workers Relations Commission Sought

Manila: Senate Committee on Migrant Workers Chairperson Raffy Tulfo on Monday called for the establishment of a Migrant Workers Relations Commission (MWRC), a separate quasi-judicial body that will handle labor disputes involving overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). Tulfo recently filed Senate Bill No. 1480 or the proposed Migrant Workers Relations Commission Act, to address the delayed, protracted, and burdensome process of resolving labor disputes currently handled by the National Labor Relations Commission (NLRC). According to Philippines News Agency, Tulfo highlighted that the National Labor Relations Commission processes over 30,000 cases each year, making OFW cases especially susceptible to delays and backlogs.

DPWH to Sue Zaldy Co’s Contractor-Brother Over Damaged Navotas Seawall

Navotas city: The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will file charges against the company owned by a brother of former Ako Bicol partylist representative Zaldy Co over the seawall that collapsed in Navotas City at the height of Super Typhoon Uwan. Secretary Vince Dizon said the DPWH will take legal action against Hi-Tone Construction and Development Corp., owned by Christopher Co, to recover government funds and ensure accountability from the contractor. Impact of Uwan Expands to 2M People as Death Toll Climbs to 6

Manila: The reported deaths from the impact of Super Typhoon Uwan (international name Fung-wong) have climbed to six, with more than two million individuals affected, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Tuesday. In its latest situation report, the agency said the fatalities include three from Cagayan Valley and one each from Bicol, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visayas.
