House generates P75-M donations for Paeng relief drive

The House of Representatives led by Speaker Martin Romualdez has generated around PHP75 million worth of cash and in kind donations for its ongoing relief drive for the victims of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng.   According to a statement on Wednesday, the Speaker’s office said cash donations and pledges reached PHP49.2 million, while in kind donations such as food items, blankets and toiletries stood at PHP26 million as of Nov. 1.   “Marami pong salamat sa lahat ng mga mabubuting puso na tumulong sa ating relief drive. 17 Bacolod schools go double shift for full in-person classes

Senator pushes for centralized death register

Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Wednesday called for the centralization of death records through an electronic system that could address the rampant fraud on death claims and other insurance benefits.   Estrada said the bill, which will establish the Philippine Death Check (PDC) Register, a centralized electronic database containing mortality data registered with the Local Civil Registrar (LCR), could also be the answer to the usual proliferation of “ghost” voters being employed by erring politicians during election season.   Under the proposal, the Philippine Statistics Authority will be tasked to manage the PDC Register and to detect and prevent identity theft

Typhoid fever cases rise by 150%

The Philippines has logged 12,124 typhoid fever cases from Jan. 1 to Nov. 2, but no regions have been reported above the epidemic threshold, the Department of Health said on Wednesday.   The tally is 150 percent or 7,280 cases higher than the 4,844 infections reported last year for the same period.   “Tulad ng cholera pababa pa ang kaso ngayon pero babantayan natin kung magkakaroon pa ng pagtaas ng kaso ng typhoid (Like cholera, typhoid cases are on a downward trend, but we will monitor any increase in cases),” Department of Health – Epidemiology Bureau Director Alethea de Guzman

Percy Lapid’s kin expect ‘major’ development within this week
