2 Koreans and 9 Filipinos Arrested for Illegal Mining in Butuan

Butuan City: The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Monday reported the arrest of two Korean nationals and nine Filipinos involved in illegal mining in Butuan City.

According to Philippines News Agency, CIDG Director Maj. Gen. Nicolas Torre stated that CIDG-Caraga operatives apprehended Joung Whan Oh and Young Gwan Mun, both Korean nationals, along with Filipino suspects known by the aliases John, Jenalyn, Herbert, Jenie, Noel, Macky, Beth, Marvin, and Elmer. The arrests took place in Barangay San Vicente on March 21.

In cooperation with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 13, the suspects were caught while transporting 500 sacks of suspected copper ore minerals valued at PHP700,000. They were using a Hyundai trailer truck and a Kia Bongo vehicle. The suspects were unable to present the necessary mining permits and related documents from the MGB and DENR.

The arrested individuals will face charges before the National Prosecution Service for violations of Sections 101 (illegal exploration), 103 (theft of minerals), and 110 (transporting minerals without a permit) in relation to Section 53 of Republic Act No. 7942, also known as the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.

Torre emphasized that all mineral resources within the public and private lands of the Philippines, including its exclusive economic zone, are owned by the State. He highlighted the State’s commitment to promoting rational exploration, development, utilization, and conservation of these resources, in collaboration with both government and the private sector, to support national growth while safeguarding the environment and protecting community rights.

He assured the public that the CIDG remains determined in apprehending violators and criminals, whether they are local or foreign nationals, and is committed to enforcing all laws. Torre also encouraged the public to report any violations and illegal activities.
