Cagayan de Oro: The Department of Tourism in Northern Mindanao (DOT-10) has completed 170 tourism road projects worth PHP6.16 billion over the past eight years, significantly boosting the region’s tourism infrastructure.

According to Philippines News Agency, during Tuesday’s Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas forum, DOT-10 Director Marie Elaine Unchuan stated that the projects, implemented from 2016 to 2024, paved 210.05 kilometers of roads under the Tourism Road Infrastructure Program. Unchuan highlighted the collaboration with the Department of Public Works and Highways and local government units across the region’s five provinces as a key factor in the successful execution of these projects.

The completion of these projects has facilitated job creation and attracted 2,602,956 foreign and local visitors to the region in 2024. The United States and Spain emerged as the top international markets contributing to this influx. Unchuan noted, “These roads not only enhance accessibility to tourist destinations but also stimulate economic growth in the region.”

Additionally, Mindanao’s first Tourist Rest Area was inaugurated in Northern Mindanao, located in Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon, on August 4, 2024. This facility aims to provide travelers with a comfortable and convenient pit stop while exploring the region. A statement from DOT emphasized that this initiative marks the beginning of more infrastructure projects designed to improve the travel experience in Northern Mindanao.
