162K Families Affected by Basyang

Manila: Families affected by the combined effects of Tropical Storm Basyang (international name Penha) and the shear line have climbed to 162,501 in seven regions, even as the number of deaths remained at 12, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in its latest update. Based on its latest tally as of 8 p.m. Sunday and released Monday morning, the number of affected families is equivalent to 579,176 persons residing in 1,201 barangays in Region 6 (Western Visayas), Negros Island Region, Regions 7 (Central Visayas), 8 (Eastern Visayas), 10 (Northern Mindanao), 11 (Davao Region), and Caraga.

According to Philippines News Agency, the disaster response body also said 15,438 families are being sheltered in 391 evacuation centers while 7,227 families are being aided outside. The Office of Civil Defense earlier defined affected families as those displaced by inclement weather and those who do not need to be transferred or removed from their homes.

Of the 12 reported deaths, the NDRRMC said six are now validated and can be broken down into four for Region 10 and two for Caraga. Meanwhile, the six deaths still undergoing confirmation include five for Region 10 and one for Caraga. The total confirmed injured or wounded were placed at 36, all from Region 10.

Damaged houses were placed at 503, with 437 classified as "partially damaged" and 66 as "totally damaged". All of the damaged houses were reported in Region 10 and Caraga, the NDRRMC said.
