Zero Local Cases, But Davao Warns on Nipah Virus Spread

Davao city: The Davao City Health Office urged residents Monday to maintain health standards as a precaution against diseases like the Nipah virus, despite no local cases being reported. Dr. Miguel Ababon, CHO head, said in an interview that while the virus is not present in the country, preventive measures are crucial.

According to Philippines News Agency, Dr. Ababon highlighted the importance of continuing to observe minimum public health standards. He advised individuals who are unwell to stay at home and, if necessary to go out, to wear a well-fitted mask and ensure hand hygiene.

Dr. Ababon emphasized that the Nipah virus primarily spreads through direct contact with infected animals or individuals, or through contaminated food, rather than through the air as influenza does. He further explained that initial symptoms of the virus resemble those of flu or fever and could potentially lead to more severe conditions such as pneumonia or severe brain inflammation.
