Subic: The Bureau of Customs (BOC) - Port of Subic has seized PHP162.2 million worth of marijuana, commonly referred to as 'kush,' following a thorough inspection of a distressed sailing yacht at the Subic Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) on Wednesday night.
According to Philippines News Agency, the discovery of 98.33 kilograms of marijuana came after mechanics alerted authorities to the possibility of the vessel carrying contraband. This led to an immediate inspection by the authorities.
The yacht, crewed by individuals from Thailand and Malaysia, was originally en route to Taiwan but had to seek emergency shelter and repairs at the SBYC after departing from Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia.
District Collector Geniefelle Lagmay of BOC-Port of Subic issued a Mission Order that authorized the inspection of the vessel, resulting in the discovery of the marijuana.
"This successful operation is a clear manifestation of the Bureau of Customs' commitment to Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno's marching order to protect our borders at all times. We acted immediately upon receipt of the information, and through the swift coordination and vigilance of our personnel and partner agencies, we were able to prevent a significant quantity of dangerous drugs from entering our communities," Lagmay stated.
The operation was a coordinated effort involving the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Law Enforcement Department, Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), Department of Justice representatives, barangay officials, SBYC officials, and other members of the composite enforcement team.
The seized marijuana was promptly handed over to the PDEA for appropriate legal proceedings in compliance with existing regulations.
At about 7 p.m. on Wednesday, joint operatives conducted the inspection, leading to the discovery and securing of the contraband. The items were taken to the Subic Bay Yacht Club boathouse for inventory.
On Thursday, PCG personnel facilitated the secure transport and turnover of the confiscated items to the PDEA for further investigation.
