Baguio: The Diocese of Baguio has issued a directive prohibiting weddings in venues not consecrated by the Catholic church.
According to Philippines News Agency, Circular No. 03-2026, signed by Baguio Bishop Rafael Cruz, mandates that weddings must take place inside consecrated parish churches or chapels.
Bishop Cruz addressed inquiries regarding wedding ceremonies at Mountain Chapel in Itogon, Benguet, which is not a consecrated church. While the chapel can be used for wedding receptions, the bishop emphasized that marriage rites are limited to consecrated oratories and private chapels, and this rule applies more strictly to unconsecrated, non-sectarian chapels.
The circular also prohibits clergy members from officiating Catholic wedding ceremonies in such venues. Diocesan and guest priests are not allowed to conduct marriage renewals within a Mass or perform nuptial renewals and blessings in non-sectarian locations, including hotels, parks, or unconsecrated chapels, while wearing liturgical vestments or using official rites.
Bishop Cruz explained that the policy aims to prevent confusion about the nature of a "Catholic sacramental wedding." The measure seeks to ensure that the holy sacrament of marriage is not reduced to a socio-cultural event.
