Visayas Grid Faces Red Alert Due to Power Plant Outages

Visayas: The Visayas grid will be under red alert status from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday due to the continued unavailability of several generating units of major coal-fired power plants amid the increased demand. The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) has issued an advisory indicating that a yellow alert status will also be in place for the grid from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

According to Philippines News Agency, an alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet contingency and regulating requirements. The available capacity currently stands at 2,562 megawatts (MW), while peak demand is projected to reach 2,542 MW. The NGCP highlighted that the red alert status has been issued due to the forced outage of Units 1 and 2 of Therma Visayas Inc., Unit 3 of the Panay Energy Development Corp., and Unit 2 of the KEPCO SPC Power Corp.

The NGCP further reported that 11 plants have been on forced outage since May this year, one since March, three since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one since 2021. Additionally, 15 other power plants are operating at derated capacities, resulting in a reduction of about 952.4 MW from the grid.
