Typhoon Tino Affects Over 17,000 Families with One Fatality Reported

Manila: Over 17,000 families have been affected so far by Typhoon Tino (international name Kalmaegi) with one reported fatality, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Tuesday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the NDRRMC’s updated report indicates that 17,124 families, equivalent to 59,918 individuals, have been impacted in Region 6 (Western Visayas), Negros Island Region, Region 7 (Central Visayas), Region 8 (Eastern Visayas), and Caraga.

The report further states that a total of 26,327 families were evacuated preemptively across Mimaropa, Regions 6, 7, 8, and Caraga. As of Tuesday afternoon, 9,170 families are currently housed in 362 evacuation centers, while 3,300 families have sought temporary shelter elsewhere.

The NDRRMC noted that the lone fatality, which is still undergoing validation, was reported in Central Visayas. No injuries have been reported due to the cyclone.

Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. has placed Police Regional Offices near Tino’s projected path on standby for immediate deployment to ensure timely assistance to affected communities. He also instructed police officers to assist in evacuation efforts led by local government units, especially for those residing in coastal areas.

Typhoon Tino has decelerated and weakened over the Iloilo Strait. According to weather bureau PAGASA’s 2 p.m. bulletin, Tino was last located over the coastal waters of Jordan, Guimaras, moving west southwest at 25 kph, with maximum sustained winds of 130 kph near the center and gusts up to 180 kph.
