Caraga: More local governments suspended classes Friday as Tropical Storm Ada brought heavy rains, flooding key highways and stranding hundreds of passengers in the Caraga Region. Classes were called off in Butuan City and the Agusan del Norte towns of Tubay, Kitcharao, and Nasipit.
According to Philippines News Agency, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains over Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur. As of 5 a.m. Friday, Ada was located 370 kilometers east of Surigao City with winds of 65 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts up to 80 kph, moving north-northwest.
The Butuan-Surigao national highway was impassable to light vehicles in flooded sections in Tubay and Kitcharao towns. Landslides were also reported in four barangays across Butuan City and Agusan del Norte.
Sea travel suspensions left 823 passengers and 388 vehicles stranded in Surigao and Lipata ports. The Department of Social Welfare and Development distributed ready-to-eat food packs to those stranded.
